Rovi’s MainConcept VC-3 Package is a software-only encoding and decoding solution for SMPTE 2019-2006 (VC-3) video streams, including support for Avid DNxHD compliant streams. The lossy HD codec was originally designed by Avid, and is mainly used in post-production and mastering environments.

VC-3 is an intra-frame only format offering extraordinary quality at the same time as reducing storage and bandwidth requirements. The format is based on a picture-by-picture coding approach where each picture is completely self-contained and can be extracted as an individual unit. It allows 8-bit and 10-bit sampling depths for 4:2:2 sampling of 1920x1080 and 1280x720. VC-3 is ideally suited as interchange codec and supports bitrates up to 220 Mbps.

The VC-3 Package offers real-time encoding as well as decoding and is fully compliant with Avid DNxHD source streams. VC-3 frames can also be demultiplexed from and multiplexed into an MXF container.

Availability:

For Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, the codec package consists of a Low Level API (in the C programming language). Under Windows, it additionally includes DirectShow filters for decoding and encoding. The decoder filter can be used by any DirectShow® application (e.g. Windows® Media Player).

The Package is available as 32-bit as well as 64-bit version for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
