Apple ProRes is a well-established intermediate format used throughout the broadcast industry. Its high-resolution capabilities and wide chroma sampling support have made it the codec of choice of many facilities worldwide. ProRes is natively supported on Apple computers and used to be available to users of Windows PCs via QuickTime.

Now, ProRes has been converted from a generic Apple format to an SMPTE approved document (RDD-36) and MainConcept is introducing a Decoder SDK which allows adding ProRes natively to any application.

While ProRes Video will typically be wrapped into a QuickTime (MOV) container another recent specification (RDD-44) allows embedding ProRes into MXF. The MainConcept ProRes Decoder SDK supports both file formats as well as ProRes Elementary Streams for a seamless integration and widest possible support of all flavors of ProRes.

Like all of the MainConcept SDKs, the ProRes Decoder SDK is available on Windows, macOS and Linux to enable efficient ProRes workflows on premise and in the cloud.

Key Features

Full SMPTE precision decoding

MainConcept’s ProRes decoder fully satisfies the precision requirements outlined in the official SMPTE specifications. It is multi-threaded and optimized delivering amazing speed on any operating system.

MOV and MXF container

In addition to the common MOV / MP4 format in which ProRes is normally stored, MainConcept’s ProRes Decoder SDK includes RDD-44 compliant MXF-demultiplexing support. This enables future IMF-based workflows to work with ProRes essences equally well as with JPEG 2000.

Accelerated decoding

Optionally the decoder can be tuned to use a less strict decoding algorithm for increased performance for proxy playback or preview of content.
