History

Launched in early 1993 by Markus Mönig in Aachen, Germany, MainConcept has been at the forefront of video processing tools and technology that has dramatically improved the experience for developers and users alike. In its early days, the company specialized in video editing software for various computer systems such as Amiga, OS/2, and Windows 95. MainConcept released its first video codec, the highly acclaimed Motion JPEG in 1995. Since then the company has successfully focused more and more on providing high performance video codecs and associated technologies (muxing, streaming, audio codecs, etc.) on an OEM basis to partners.

Over the years MainConcept has been developing a complete range of standards-based codecs and established long-term relationships with many leading companies worldwide, including Adobe, Leitch/Harris, Microsoft, mobiTV, Sonic Solutions, Sony, and Panasonic.

Based on its vision of “Every Codec. Every Platform”, MainConcept today provides a wide set of software solutions for developers and professional consumers that enable them to easily and affordably compress, manage and deliver quality video over the Internet and to CDs, DVDs, mobile devices and to other formats.

To further strengthen the company and its technology reach, MainConcept looked out for a technology partner with a synergistic product and customer portfolio in early 2007. Since November 2007, the company is a wholly owned subsidiary of DivX, Inc. (NASDAQ: DIVX).
